Welcome to my home!

My name is Valdemar Christian. I was born 400 years ago in 1622.

I am a prince and my father, King Christian IV, built this palace for me – that is why it is called Valdemars Slot.

Come with me and I will tell you some stories about the palace and show you the art that we have here – some very old, and some new.

Are you ready?

Let’s begin.

The Entrance Hall

The sculptures in this room are by the famous artist Jiří Georg Dokoupil.

They are called Furniture for Fotos and they are made for you to sit on and take a picture.

Give us your best pose!

Niels Juel

Here in the entrance hall is a painting of the Danish hero Admiral Niels Juel, who was born 400 years ago.

Can you find him?

Clue: He is wearing a hat with huge bird feathers!

Niels Juel is famous for winning huge battles at sea. My father, King Christian IV, gave Valdemars Slot to him as a prize for winning an important battle in 1677 against the Swedish.

Can you count the ships in this painting?

What can you see hanging from the chain around the Admiral’s neck? What noise does this animal make?

The King’s Room

In this room are paintings of Denmark’s kings from more than 300 years ago.

How many paintings can you count?

My father King Christian IV is wearing a black coat and hat. He is sitting on a horse and wearing a huge ruff around his neck. Can you find him?

Find the gold crown, hidden somewhere on the walls

The Garden Room

Today, Louise Iuel-Brockdorff Albinus owns Valdemars Slot and she lives here with her two children and two little dogs.

Louise is Admiral Niels Juel’s great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great granddaughter. In this room, you can see other people from their family, who lived here hundreds of years ago.

These paintings are by two different artists: Carl Gustaf Pilo and Jens Juel. In all his portraits here, Pilo paints a curtain. Can you find them?

The Verdure Tapestries

These tapestries were made over 300 years ago in Belgium, where many of the best weavers lived and worked.

Many castles and palaces in Europe wanted tapestries like this, showing beautiful gardens, birds and plants.

How many different birds can you find?

What noise would each of them make?

Each of these birds flies in a different way – maybe some move very fast, some very fancy, some with a little wiggle. Move your arms to show you think they would fly.

The Chapel

What pictures can you find on the chapel ceiling?

What can you see?

Eye spy with my little eye

The Ballroom

In this grand room there are three huge portraits, which have hung in this spot since 1751! King Frederik V is in the middle and his two wives, Louise and Juliane Marie, on either side.

Look the king in the eyes and walk across the room. No matter where you stand, he always appears to be looking at you!
