Learn and play at Valdemars Slot

Welcome to my home!

My name is Valdemar Christian and I am a prince. My father was King Christian IV, and he built this palace for me – that is why it is called Valdemars Slot. I never lived here, as I died young doing battle against the Swedes.

Come with me through the palace, and I will tell you what happened. Along the way, we will look at the artworks, and I’ll point out some quirky details.

The Entrance Hall

Here you have to sit and lie on the art and ask your mother, father, or friend take a picture.

See, it looks like you're in a cartoon!

Where is King Christian IV?

There is a picture of me hanging here, but there are also a lot of other paintings.
Can you guess which of these kings is my father?

Is his horse white?
No

Is the horse rearing?
No

Is he wearing a ruff around his neck?
Yes

My dad, King Christian IV, is painted in the far left. Did you find him?

The Garden Room

In this room you see some of those who have previously lived in the palace. They are not related to me, but to the naval hero Niels Juel, whom you will hear about in a moment.

The picture above the fireplace is a portrait of Anne Margrethe Juel. In addition to being the most beautiful woman H.C. Andersen had ever seen, she was also the mother of the man portrayed in the painting to her right, Frederik. He is the great-great-great-great-grandfather of Louise, who lives in the castle today. The painting has been lost, but is now back in the castle, where it belongs. Look closely at the painting, can you see the detail that reveals that suggests the painting was completed here? Write your answer in the bubble.

The Verdure Tapestries

How many birds can you find in these tapestries?

Who do you think would live in such a place?

Niels Juel

Niels Juel (1629-1697) was a Danish naval hero who was born about 400 years ago. He loved to sail and fought against the Swedes to protect Denmark. He was clever and brave and won a major naval battle at Køge Bay in 1677. That's why my father gave him Valdemars Slot.

Can you see what Niels Juel is pointing at?

Can you find these pictures on the chapel ceiling?

I spy with my little eye…

Look out of the window.

What can you see outside that is the same colour as the artworks?

Here in the Ballroom are three huge portraits, which have hung in this spot for over three hundred years! Frederik V is in the middle and his two wives, Louise and Juliane Marie, on either side of him.

Look the king in the eyes and walk across the room. No matter where you stand in the room he always appears to looksat you!
