The battle in Køge Bay
|
The jubilation and rejoicing saw no end when Admiral Juel, on July 1st 1677, employing new and unproven tactics and with a much smaller fleet, won a great battle against Sweden in Køge Bay without the loss of a single Danish ship. An achievement which earned him the reputation of being Europe’s most famous admiral.
His prize money, 10% of the value of the captured Swedish ships, could not be met in cash by the king. However, this was redeemed by the king’s decision to sell the crown’s land and Valdemars Slot on Tåsinge to the admiral. From 1678 the estate has been in the possession of the family where the present owner is the tenth generation in line after Niels Juel. |
